YMCA Signs - PA

During our recent road trip, we came across several YMCA signs and had to stop to take photos of them. The YMCA has been around for many years and was definitely a part of our childhoods.

The YMCA was founded on June 6, 1844 by Sir George Williams in London, originally as the Young Men's Christian Association. The program strives to put Christian principles into practice by developing a healthy "body, mind, and spirit" and to create a supportive community; to help young men to address the social challenges they may be experiencing.

The first YMCA in the United States opened on December 29, 1851, in Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1851 by Captain Thomas Valentine Sullivan, an American seaman and missionary. The YMCA was located in Old South Church. Over the last 150 years the Y's mission has grown exponentially, and today the Y is active in more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the U.S.

As a nonprofit, the Y is committed to empowering people to reach their full potential, to improving their well-being, inspire people to take action, make communities stronger and to ensure everyone has the opportunity to become more confident in themselves, be healthier, stay connected and feel secure.
