The Speaker's House - Home of Frederick Muhlenberg, Trappe, Pa

Frederick Muhlenberg was a minister, a politician, the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Dean of the United States House of Representatives

Frederick was born in Trappe, Pa. He was the son of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, a well-known Lutheran minister, and his wife, Anna Maria Weiser.

At the age of thirteen Frederick was sent with his brothers to be educated in Germany. In 1770 he returned to America and was ordained as a Lutheran minister.

The following year he married Catharine Schaefer, the daughter of a Philadelphia sugar refiner; they would have seven children. Frederick’s home is located in Trappe, PA and is known as The Speaker’s House.
