Updated: Feb 16, 2022
In 1969, Donald M. Denlinger purchased nineteen 25 ton N-5 cabooses from the Pennsylvania Railroad.
On Mother’s Day of 1970, the Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant opened for business on a tract of land along the Strasburg Railroad. All the cabooses were painted red. During the first 4 hours that day, 4500 guests toured the caboose units.
On February 1, 2016 the Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant were sold to Todd & Tyler Prickett, along with their wives, Debra and Katherine. Now there are 38 cabooses, a baggage car and a mail car decorated in the schemes of America’s most famous railroad. Also on the property are free movies played in the bar, a miniature train ride and a petting zoo.
