The Hermitage Mansion - Philadelphia, PA

The Hermitage Mansion is located in the Wissahickon area of Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA. The history goes back 300 years to a group of Rosicrucians, a religious group of “hermits” or Pietists. The group traveled to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1694, looking for privacy and freedom. They were given 175-acres of land, encompassing the site of the present Hermitage Mansion.

In 1895, the City of Philadelphia came into possession of the property through a sale. The selling price was $1, with the City taking over the balance of the outstanding mortgage.

Today, the Mansion is home to the Delaware Valley Opera Company.
