Updated: Aug 18, 2022
Arriving to Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, you will want to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial. In 1932 this 60-foot tall granite structure was erected to commemorate the Wright brothers, Wilbur & Orville’s, achievement in aviation. Many of their test studies with the glider were on this once shifting dune. Flying the world's first successful motor-operated airplane, they made the first controlled sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air, aircraft with the Wright Flyer on December 17, 1903. The brothers were also the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. This is a beautiful historical site to visit if visiting the Outer Banks.
