PPG Industries, Inc., 1 PPG Place, is a complex in downtown Pittsburgh consisting of 6 buildings within 3 city blocks and 5-1/2 acres. Designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee.
Pittsburgh Plate Glass was founded in 1883 by Capt. John B. Ford and John Pitcairn. They opened the nations first successful plate glass factory in the U.S. in Creighton, PA. The first headquarters was located on 4th Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. Ground was broken on January 28, 1981 for the new headquarter complex.
During the construction over 10,000 artifacts were unearthed from the pre-revolutionary war era such as glassware, leather goods and medical materials.
PPG used 20,000 pieces of the company’s glass during construction. One of the buildings, PPG Place is 40 stories and 635 feet tall. The offices opened in August 1983.
