P.&R. Coal & Iron Building - Pottsville, PA

In 1905, the foundation work began on the Coal and Iron building and it was completed in 1906. This low-rise, neo-renaissance style building has 5 floors. For most of the 20th century, this ornate building was once the seat of economic and political power in Schuylkill County. Designed by an architect from the city of Reading, the building housed the coal-holding division of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. Currently it houses the Reading Anthracite Company's library, museum, and the company’s offices.

Reading Anthracite Company dates back to 1871 when its predecessor, the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company (P. & R. C.& I.) was chartered. In 1956, P. & R. C. & I. changed their name to The Philadelphia & Reading Corporation, of which Reading Anthracite Company was one of its many operating divisions. In 1961, Philadelphia & Reading Corporation dissolved itself of it's anthracite coal business and sold it to the Reading Anthracite Company (its present owners).

The Reading Anthracite Company is out of Pottsville, PA and mines and supplies high-quality, multi-grade hard coal products. They are a leading anthracite coal mining company and active supporter and innovator of alternative energy solutions. They mainly mine anthracite coal in the Coal Region of eastern PA. The company also owns the Bear Valley Strip Mine in Northumberland County, PA.
