Old Stone Jail - Honesdale, PA
Updated: Aug 18, 2022
Honesdale’s old stone jail was built in 1859. It housed Wayne County's criminals until 1935. Constructed almost entirely of rough stone, its damp, gloomy interior has been compared to a dungeon. Jailbreaks, hangings, and even the birth of a baby girl have happened within these somber walls. During the jail's early history men, women, and even children endured the poor accommodations.
Today the jail is not in use, but is open for public tours. Check Wayne County Historical Society's Facebook events page for up-to-date information about tours or contact the historical society to arrange a private tour.
