Oakley Street Mosaic Step Project - Pittsburgh, PA
Updated: Nov 2, 2021
The stairway consists of 7500 individual mosaic tiles, no bigger than a quarter, and spans 77 risers. The tiles were installed over a period of three months.
When viewing the stairway from the bottom, you see an image of a young woman wearing rain boots picking flowers.
Artist Laura Jean McLaughlin created the design based on input from the community. When it came to placing the tiles, almost 100 volunteers stepped up to help.
Her artwork can also be seen at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Whole Foods in East Liberty.
