Mt. Gilead Community Church - New Hope, PA
Mt. Gilead Community Church - Built in 1835 and Rebuilt in 1852.
Mt. Gilead Church is the first all African-American congregation to exist in Bucks County. This was a stop on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves from Maryland, Delaware and the Carolinas.
Benjamin “Big Ben” Jones was a congregation member who was sold out by a white resident in the Bucks County area. Rumors have it that Big Big is buried in the cemetery at Mt. Gilead Church but others say he is buried in a potter’s field with his wife Sarah.
