House Poem - Pittsburgh, PA

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

House Poem was created in 2004 by Huang Xiang and is part of the City of Asylum’s Exile Writers in Residence which seeks to offer spaces for endangered artists to work freely and safely.

Mr. Xiang lived in the home for almost three years. It is now used by writers from the City of Asylum/Pittsburgh programs.

Mr. Xiang’s work has been banned and repressed in China. This “house publication” was designed to celebrate his arrival to Pittsburgh and freedom to publish without persecution. The writing on the home is done in calligraphy and was created in the expressionistic “grass style” which is his trademark. The writings include selections from his poems.

The home is located at: 408 Sampsonia Way, Pittsburgh, PA .
