Burpee Park - Doylestown, PA

In 1876, Washington Atlee Burpee borrowed a thousand dollars from his mother and started his own mail order poultry business. In 1878 he started W. Atlee Burpee and Company offering vegetable seeds. In 1888 he purchased the 100-acre Fordhook Farms in Doylestown where he grew and tested the seeds before offering them for sale in his catalog.

At the time of W. Atlee Burpee's death in 1910 his company was the largest seed company in the world at that time. His son, David Burpee ran the company until 1970 when he sold it to General Foods.
