The Saucoma Iron Co. began in 1857 producing rails for railroads and armor plating for the U.S. Navy. Four years later it was renamed Bethlehem Iron Company. In 1899 the name changed again to Bethlehem Steel Company. In 1904, Charles M. Schwab became President and Chairman of the Board.
Bethlehem Steel Corporation was a steelmaking company for most of the 20th century. They were the 2nd world's largest steel producing and largest ship building company in the world.
Bethlehem Steel discontinued most of its operations in 1982, ceased production on November 18, 1995, declared bankruptcy in 2001 and was dissolved in 2003.
