August Wilson Mural - Pittsburgh, PA

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

This mural of August Wilson is located on Erin Street & Center Avenue, in Pittsburgh. The mural is located outside Black Beauty’s Lounge. The mural was done by young artists during a summer work program of Pulitzer Award winning playwright, August Wilson.

Born in 1945, Frederick August Kittle took the pen name August Wilson when he was 20 years old and began his writing career. He initially worked as a poet. In 1979 his career as a playwright began.

Mr. Wilson’s ten plays are known as the Pittsburgh Cycle. Nine of the plays are set in the Hill District where the mural is.

Within the mural is a scene from each of his 10 plays. There is so much detail to this mural you almost need someone to point out what each detail means.
