American Beautyberry - Gettysburg, PA

The American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a gorgeous shrub that we came across in a recent trip to Gettysburg. The American beautyberry is a native plant with three seasons of interest. In spring it blooms small flowers with leaves, summer foliage is a rich green, and fall brings clusters of beautiful purple berries. The purple berries appear to have a metallic shine when sunlight reflects off them. Quite often the berries persist well into winter.

The bush produces edible berries that can be turned into very tasty recipes and leaves that can be used as an effective insect repellent. Although we have never tasted them, it is said that they are not the most delicious fruit, and when raw, their flavor is somewhat astringent. It is said that the berries make a great jam.
